LSRJ Board of Directors Now Accepting Applications for Student Directors

Want to learn the ins and outs of leading a national organization alongside other bright and passionate law students and lawyers?

Looking to add non-profit management and administration to your advocacy toolkit?

Take your LSRJ involvement to the national level!

LSRJ is now accepting applications from law students interested in serving on the organization’s national Board of Directors during the 2012-2013 term. Board leadership provides an invaluable opportunity to foster passion for reproductive justice while also providing tools and the knowledge necessary to be most effective in the movement.

Law students are the backbone of LSRJ. LSRJ’s Board of Directors maintains a student majority. Student Directors serve an initial one-year term, followed by a possible one-year renewal term. Rising 2Ls are encouraged to apply. Students who serve during their 3L year and subsequently take a fellowship relating to reproductive rights or justice will be eligible for a second term.

Applications can be downloaded here. They are due at 11:59 p.m. EST, March 16, 2012 to . LSRJ will conduct phone interviews with finalists the last week in March and the first week in April. Selected applicants must be able to attend the in-person orientation scheduled for June 22-24, 2012 at LSRJ’s national office in Oakland, CA.

We strongly encourage all interested law students to apply and welcome a variety of backgrounds and lived experiences. Please do not hesitate to with any questions you may have.

Human Rights Law Primer, Second Edition, Now Available

Students and advocates alike can use the Primer to enter the classroom equipped to foster meaningful discussions about reproductive rights as human rights and enter the field with an indispensable addition to their advocacy toolboxes.

The Primer features a basic overview of international law and human rights law, focusing on the core human rights treaties and the treaty monitoring systems. It goes on to discuss ten major human rights and how they apply to various aspects of reproductive rights.  It draws upon treaties, comments from treaty monitoring bodies, international case law, and scholarly commentary in order to shape the conversation about what a particular right encompasses.  The Primer concludes with a brief overview of the domestic application of human rights principles in the United States.

LSRJ Releases Updated Results of National Reproductive Rights Law & Justice Course Survey

Reproductive Rights Law Courses on the Rise but Only Available at 1 in 5 U.S. Law Schools

The Course Survey now includes data regarding all relevant curricular offerings from the 2003-04 through 2010-11 academic years.  For complete survey results, including graphical representation of trends, download a copy of the Course Survey here.

Key findings:
• Only 20% of ABA-approved law schools have offered a reproductive rights law & justice course to students over the last eight years.
• 51 unique courses and instructor-led reading groups have been offered at 39 law schools in 17 states since 2003. 
• 31% of reproductive rights law & justice courses have resulted from student advocacy through LSRJ chapter campaigns. 
• 27 unique courses were offered during the 2010-11 academic year, the highest number of offerings during any academic year to date and almost three times as many as the previous year.
